I use eagle one chrome polish. It works good but not fast, lots of elbow grease and time. As for protection, can't say there is any unless you want to wax it afterwards that works ok. Just be very carefull,as WD said the chrome is very thin and scratches very easy. Over time I would change things over to good american chrome(harley parts have good chrome). One more thing be careful not to polish the chrome over plastic stuff(turn signals,headlight housing, and a few others I think), check to make sure it metal under there before you start rubbing or you might rub it off or start it pealing off.
